2017 Rugby League Program Comes To A Close
On Monday 1 May, the Academy’s Harold Matthews and SG Ball squads gathered at St Mary’s Rugby League Club for the 11th Annual Rugby League Presentation, to recognise the hard work and improvements made over the course of the program. The Academy’s Rugby League program runs over eight weeks, with nine rounds of competition. The Academy teams compete against other clubs as a part of New South Wales Rugby League’s U16s (Harold Matthews) and U18s (SG Ball) representative competitions with the support of not only New South Wales Rugby League but the Penrith Panthers and the Parramatta Eels.
The Academy opened the presentation by recognising the supporters that allow the Rugby League program to operate. In the room was NSW Rugby League CEO David Trodden, from the Parramatta Eels Recruitment and Development department Anthony Field, Penrith Panthers Recruitment and Development Manager Jim Jones, President of St Mary’s Leagues Club Warren Smith and Chairman of Penrith Junior Rugby League and our very own program manager David Patullo.
The two squads gained insights in what it takes to become a professional Rugby League player with special guest speakers Isaiah Yeo and Jedd Cartwright from the Penrith Panthers, discussing the sacrifices you need to make and the dedication you need to apply.
Yeo and Cartwright presented the following athletes with their awards:
Harold Matthews Coach’s Award – Joshua Agius
Harold Matthews Best & Fairest Award – Luke Jennings
SG Ball Coach’s Award – Hayden Bonnano
SG Ball Best & Fairest Award – Luke Puru
Glenn Patullo Harrison “Blues” Award – Bill Demanuele, Gear Manager (for outstanding service to the WSAS program).
The Academy’s Rugby League program runs with great success year after year with alumni including Bryce Cartwright, Pauli Pauli and John Asiata. With the unwavering support the Academy receives from Parramatta, Penrith, NSWRL, St Marys Leagues Club and the dedicated volunteers we will continue to see Academy players on the big screen in years to come. Congratulations to all award winners for 2017.
