Academy Athletes Shining Brightly

St Marys Rugby League Club played host to the Western Sydney Academy’s annual Awards Night on Saturday, 8th September.

Athletes, family and VIP guests gathered for the event, which recognises the Academy’s athletes’ participation in their pre-elite development programs, and some outstanding achievements across a range of sports.

Athlete of the Year Awards were presented for the sports of AFL (Girls), Basketball, Cycling, Golf, Netball, Softball and Tenpin Bowling.

The audience was enthralled with special guest speaker, Marlene Matthews AO, who was engaged by MC Fiona Crawford in a bar stool banter session on stage. One of Australia’s “Golden Girls” from the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, Marlene was familiar and warm as she addressed the audience with humour, a wealth of knowledge and some incredible stories about her time as an Olympian.

The night culminated in the presentation of the Woolworths Scholarships to one male and one female high achieving athlete. Woolworths’s support enables the Academy to award the highest achieving male and female athlete with a $5,000 scholarship to assist in the costs of representative sport and education.
