AFL Boys Take On The South West
The Academy’s AFL Boys squad are reaching the conclusion of their program with the Western Sydney Academy of Sport. Through collaboration with AFL NSW/ACT, the Academy has been able to provide the young athletes with a range of technical and educational development sessions. At the beginning of 2018, the cohort of 27 athletes began technical training at Gipps Road Sporting Complex, Greystanes under the guidance of Assistant Coaches Carl Hanebuth, Darren White, Paul Jones and Head Coach Joel Cousens. The squad participated in weekly sessions with a core goal of developing the skills and talent of the players as they approach the years where representative AFL will become a reality for some.
The AFL boys partook in a functional movement screening with the practitioners at Sydney West Sports Medicine at the beginning of the program to ensure that any problem areas or movement habits that could potentially cause injury, were identified to enforce corrective actions. The squad were also educated on the importance of nutrition and cyber safety.
On Monday 14 May the squad made their way to Glenmore Park to engage in match play training against South West Sydney Academy of Sport. The athletes were able to put all of the knowledge and training they had gained over the last several months into action against the local rivals.
