2016 ClubsNSW Academy Games Wrap

The weekend of 8th-10th April saw the Academy’s Hockey, Netball, Golf and Triathlon squads compete in the 2016 ClubsNSW Academy Games. This year the Games were hosted once again by the Central Coast Academy of Sport who did a great job at welcoming all of the Academies from across NSW, and organising such a large scale event. The weekend was a great showcase of sporting talent and in particular our Western Sydney athletes.

The tournament style weekend was a great development experience for our athletes and a perfect opportunity for our squads to display their talent, integrity and spirit.

Golf

Our golfers competed in a 36 hole event over Saturday & Sunday. Day 1 was spent at Peats Ridge Golf Club where our athletes started the weekend strongly.

Competition on Day 2 was conducted at Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club. Our athletes were successful in winning the team event. Our winning team was Bradley Doherty, Mark Hancock, Jack Walden and Madelyn Haggerty.

Our boys did particularly well with individual results as follows:

1st: Bradley Doherty

2nd: Josh Gadd

3rd: Mark Hancock

Congratulations to all our golfers on your performances and display of sportsmanship over the 2016 ClubsNSW Academy Games weekend.

Hockey

Our male and female squads competed in a round robin competition at Wyong Hockey Complex, involving four other regional Academies and 112 competitors. The games were conducted in a 9-a-side, round robin format.

Our girls squad played four games, with one win over local rivals South West Academy of Sport. Head Hockey coach Ryan Knowles noted that the girls “improved with every game”. Coach of the girls squad Mel Brewin was pleased with the progress of the squad over the two days of competition.

The Academy’s MVP was Kimberly Sagger, with honourable mentions to Mackenzie Baldwin and Helen Legge on their performances throughout the tournament.

Our boys squad had two draws and two wins over the weekend. Coach Ryan Knowles said the squad gained “the best result for our Academy since we have been going to the Academy Games”.

The MVP for the boy’s squad was awarded to Damon Arapa, with honourable mentions to Raveesh Srivastava and Tristan Potts.

Staff were highly impressed with the support that the two Academy teams showed to one another throughout the Games. Their teamwork and encouragement shone over the weekend!

Triathlon

Our triathletes participated in a weekend full of competition and educational clinics.

They competed against 61 competitors across five other Academies in the swim, cycle and running disciplines.

Results for the Academy’s athletes were pleasing with congratulations to Mitchell Westhuizen who finished 1st in the Youth Boys Triathlon, and Hannah Moloney who finished 1st in the Youth Girls Triathlon. An honourable mention to Mackenzie Penn who finished 3rd in the Junior Girls Triathlon.

Our triathletes had an opportunity to participate in various clinics, provided by coaches from different Academies, as well as displaying their incredible talent as they competed against some of the strongest triathletes in the State.

Netball

The Academy’s Division 2 team played at Niagara Park in a round robin style competition. The weekend saw them compete against 10 different Academies, winning all nine games.

Squad coach, Helen Olivier, commented that the squad displayed skill and determination in both defence and attack.

The MVP was awarded to Tyler Pelligra who played C/WA. Coach Helen Olivier also noted a special mention to Lauren Woods who played GS.

Our Division 1 team competed at the Central Coast Grammar School venue, where the competition was exceptionally strong. Head Coach Heather Smith stated “The players gained valuable experience in performance areas such as resilience, focus and intensity…” she added “the team was expceptional in their conduct, effort and overall representation of the Academy at the Games.”

The MVP title was awarded to Matisse Letherbarrow, who displayed a consistent, high level of performance over the weekend.
