Western Sydney Academy of Sport held its eighth annual fundraising event ‘A Night With The Stars’ on Friday 10 March at Castle Hill RSL, with over 250 guests in attendance. This event is the Academy’s major fundraiser, assisting in providing athlete development programs for western Sydney’s young talented athletes.
This weekend will see the launch of the Suncorp Super Netball League. After parting ways with New Zealand and ceasing the ANZ Championship this new Super League was born. With the Nine Network and Telstra teaming up to broadcast the games each week.
The 2017 Canoe Slalom Oceania Championships kicked off on 27 January at Auckland’s Vector Wero Whitewater Park, where Academy alumni displayed the incredible talent hailing from western Sydney.
With only five weeks left until “A Night With The Stars”, excitement is building as guest speakers, entertainment and hotly demanded auction items are set in. Celebrity sports stars such as Cameron Girdlestone and Terry Lamb sit among other stars in the Bar Stool Banter segment.
From the 2nd – 8th January Softball Australia held the 48th U17 Girls’ National Softball Championships at Blacktown International Sportspark. Three of The Academy’s talented young softballers Shaylan Whatman, Georgia Britton and Emily Peters all competed as members of the NSW representative team.
On Wednesday 7th December 2016, Academy cycling graduate Stephen Cuff made his way down the Joe Ciavola Velodrome in Melbourne to compete in the 2017 Oceania Track Championships (although conducted in 2016, this event is still a 2017 Championship). Stephen competed over 4 days, securing a number of medals.
The Hills Shire Council played host to Academy athletes who are residing or competing in The Hills LGA on Wednesday afternoon. The athletes came together at The Hills Shire Council chambers to have afternoon tea with the Mayor Clr Yvonne Keane. Mayor Keane presented all our athletes with a certificate of commendation for dedication to their sports of AFL, Netball, Softball, Golf and Cycling.
In January 2017, Softball’s Australian Regional Championships will be held in Perth for females and Brisbane for the males. The following Academy softballers have been selected to play in the U15’s Metro Team at the event…
On Monday, 7 November, Academy golfer Joshua Gadd qualified for the NSW Open Championship 2016 which starts today at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club. There were only two positions available from Glenmore Heritage Valley Golf Club to qualify for the event as it is holding the highest number of professional golfers in 65 years.
On Saturday 15 October the Academy inducted athletes from AFL, Softball, Netball, Cycling and Golf into the 2016/17 Programs. The induction day was held at the Western Sydney University’s Kingswood Campus (WSU) and accompanied by industry professionals who shared their knowledge with athletes to assist with their elite development, including a presentation by the University on gaining entry for sporting talent.
