On 21 October the 2017/18 athletes gathered at Western Sydney University’s Kingswood Campus for the annual Athlete Induction Day. New and returning athletes gathered in the morning ready for a day full of information, preparation and learning.
Basketball NSW is the principal program partner in the inaugural Western Sydney Academy of Sport’s basketball program. Both the Academy and Basketball NSW have worked collaboratively to develop and implement the 2017/18 program. The program is designed to replicate Basketball NSW’s Developing Athlete Program (DAP) with the added value of education components.

Sports strapping (or taping) is extremely common in the sporting world and the everyday clinic. Very rarely will you attend a sports match and not see someone running around with one part or another strapped up. In fact, most competitive sports teams allocate time before each training session and game purely to allow their athletes to be strapped!
Each year at the Academy’s annual Athlete Dinner & Awards Night our Major Scholarship Partner, Woolworths present the highest achieving male and female athlete from the program year with a generous scholarship to utilise on sporting costs and equipment with an added component that goes towards education expenses.
On Tuesday 19 September, two long-standing athletes Joshua Gadd and Lauren Woods made their way to NSW Parliament House for a leadership forum followed by a parliamentary reception. The leadership forum saw special guest speakers including Nathan Hindmarsh (NRL Ambassador), Anne Fitzgerald (ClubsNSW) and Samantha Poolman (Giants Netball). These special guests spoke to athletes on what it takes to become a good leader and how they made it to where they are today.

On Friday 8 September Castle Hill RSL Club played host to the Academy’s athletes, athlete families and VIP guests for the 13th Annual Athlete Dinner & Awards Night. With special guest speakers Kristina Brice, Julie Fitzgerald and Briony Akle.
I am often tired and sore after I compete on weekends. I am finding that this can sometimes interfere with my Monday training sessions. I am told that ice baths may help my recovery, although this is just hard to get access to all the time. Are there any other important recovery options that I should consider?
One of Australia’s iconic sports ball brands has announced it will support talented young athletes within western Sydney through a new partnership with The Academy. Spartan Sports, whose Head Office is based in Mosman on Sydney’s north shore, have confirmed they will support the Academy through various initiatives to get these great quality sports balls to not only the Academy’s talented athletes but the local clubs and associations in the Western Sydney region.
