Inaugural Basketball Program Takes Flight

Basketball NSW is the principal program partner in the inaugural Western Sydney Academy of Sport’s basketball program. Both the Academy and Basketball NSW have worked collaboratively to develop and implement the 2017/18 program. The program is designed to replicate Basketball NSW’s Developing Athlete Program (DAP) with the added value of education components.

The program provides an essential and highly relevant step in the development pathway of young basketball athletes from across the western Sydney region – with the ultimate goal of preparing these talented young players for progression to the Basketball NSW State Athlete Program.

Athletes will undergo technical training on a weekly basis out of two western Sydney hubs, The Hills and Penrith. The Hills Hornets, Penrith Panthers Association and Penrith Basketball Stadium are all providing venue and logistics support to the Academy program.

Not only will these athletes receive ongoing technical training but they will also be given education sessions in areas such as social media, anti-doping, time management, nutrition, injury prevention & management, plus more. They will also receive screening and fitness testing by the Official Health Partner, Sydney West Sports Medicine, as well as various personal development opportunities.

The Academy is excited to see the athletes develop over the course of the program. Athletes attended their first technical training sessions on 13th & 14th October and will attend the Athlete Induction Day on 21st October. Training sessions will continue until April 2018.

The Academy will also be offering the education components to athletes in Basketball NSW’s DAP program from the Sydney Metropolitan area.
