The 2011 Bowls Squad has received technical and educational training under the guidance of Steve McGuiness and Neil Burkett at the host training venues Club Merrylands and Mt Lewis Bowling Club. The program so far has also featured guest coaches, competitions and skills testing with a view to improving the athletes performance and enhancing their personal devleopment.
In addition to specific skills training the current squad have attended a drugs in sport seminar, psychology seminar and have participated in video analysis conducted by Bowls NSW. They also attended a media skills and public speaking workshop held at Castle Hill RSL.
Recent activities have included a nutrition cooking session at the NSW Institute of Sport where athletes learnt about how nutrition can affect their performance and also tried their hand at cooking a simple, nutritious snack. Lawn Bowls legend Steve Glasson was on hand at one of the athletes training sessions to pass on some of his knowledge which the athletes found invaluable.
Congratulations to Academy Bowls Squad coach Neil Burkett for his performance at the 2011 NSW Open where he triumphed in the Men's Singles final. Burkett, who has over 550 international apprearances and a string of Commonwealth gold, silver and bronze medals to his name, is a fantastic asset to the Academy program with a wealth of bowls knowledge. Well done Neil!
Coming up in the program from 4th-6th October, the squad will be traveling to Merimbula to participate in an Inter Academy Challenge hosted by South East Region Academy of Sport.
The 2011 Program will conclude in October to be followed by the 2012 Program selections in January/ February 2012.
