National Championship Triumph For Softball Athletes
5 WSAS softballers have tasted victory at the U17 National Softball Championships which were held in NSW for the girls and WA for the boys.
NSW finished the rain-shortened round robin portion of the U17 Girls’ National Softball Championship with a perfect 5-0 record while outscoring their opponents 43-3.
On the final day, NSW edged Qld 2-1 to earn direct entry into the Grand Final.
The state of origin final saw NSW score 2 runs in the 1st inning on their way to a 3-1 Championship victory.
In the boys division, which is named the Arthur Allsopp Shield Daniel Harrison was the lone representative for WSAS as the teams battled extreme heat in WA as opposed to the girls battling rain in NSW.
In an action packed two days it was NSW who continued their strong finish to the week by beating Queensland after an entertaining and high scoring 8th innings tiebreak. The win gave NSW a spot in the grand final on Saturday night with their opponents determined in a semi-final clash between Queensland and the ACT, after the latter eliminated hosts WA from the competition with an impressive win earlier in the day. After being the best team of the round robin it was Queensland who booked a grand final match up with NSW.
After an extremely tough week of competition the 2016 Arthur Allsopp Shield grand final featured the two best performing teams of the week in NSW and Queensland. It appeared that after a mixed start the competition that NSW had discovered their form that led them to last year’s championships, peaking at exactly the right time in preparation for the grand final.
In an extremely tight finish it was the boys in sky blue that were able to hold their nerve and close out a 5-4 victory, earning the title of 2016 National Champions!
After a very impressive tournament Daniel Harrison was also named at 3rd base in the All Tournament Team.
Congratulations to all our athletes involved on some great results!
