HOCKEY PROGRAM

The Academy’s Hockey Program provides high performance training opportunities for talented young athletes in the western Sydney region. In partnership with Hockey NSW, the program provides development opportunities for athletes in the areas of technical skill, education and personal development, preparing athletes for the next level of elite sport representation.

The Academy Program includes specific skill components, testing and reporting procedures set by Hockey NSW. Together with competition opportunities, this allows athletes to further progress in the hockey development pathway.

Duration: October – April

Venues: WSU Kingswood Hockey Fields

The Program will comprise of technical development opportunities, athlete education, sports science and fitness elements for Academy scholarship holders. The Program aims to prepare athletes for progression to higher levels of individual performance and achievement, specifically selection into the Hockey NSW/NSWIS Emerging Talent Program.

Athletes will have the opportunity to compete at the ClubsNSW Academy Games.

To be eligible for the Academy Hockey Program, athletes must be:

  • Aged between 16 and 18 years at the time of participation in the Program;
  • Committed to progressing to higher representation within the sport of hockey;
  • A current financial member of a local Hockey Association affiliated with Hockey NSW;
  • Currently residing within the Local Government Areas of Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, City of Parramatta, Penrith or The Hills.

An athlete levy of $390 is applicable to athletes, which assists in meeting the costs of the Program. This will be advised at the time of nominations.

In addition to regular scheduled training sessions, the following benefits will apply to athletes selected within the WSAS Academy Hockey Program:

  • Individual, as well as squad high quality coaching endorsed by Hockey NSW;
  • Insight into what it takes to become a professional athlete;
  • Athlete education program including seminars provided by specialists in nutrition, physiology and injury management & prevention;
  • Access to online portals for ASADA, AIS My Basecamp and other relevant websites;
  • Opportunities to represent WSAS at various events;
  • Access to the WSAS Sportslocker online communication system;
  • Academy athlete uniform clothing;
  • Free access to Fit 4 All gym located in Penrith;
  • Ability to nominate for the annual Woolworths Athlete Scholarship;
  • Privileged pricing on 2XU compression clothing purchases;
  • A 20% discount on services provided by Sydney West Sports Medicine.
