2017 ClubsNSW Academy Games Wrap

The weekend of 7th-9th April saw the Academy’s Hockey, Netball, Golf and boys Softball squads head to the NSW Central Coast to compete against Academies from across the state. Hosted once again by the Central Coast Academy of Sport, the ClubsNSW Academy Games showcased the sporting talent in regional NSW in particular our Western Sydney athletes.

The tournament style weekend was a great development experience for our athletes and a perfect opportunity for our squads to display their talent, integrity and spirit.

Our golfers competed in a 36 hole event over Saturday & Sunday. Day 1 was spent at The Springs Golf Course where our athletes started the weekend battling the wet conditions on the course.

Competition on Day 2 was conducted at Wyong Golf Club where our athletes made a strong comeback. Christine Shin was the Net Champion for the girls competition and Scratch Runner Up with scores of 83 & 89.

Golf Head Coach Asef Haddad noted “The golfers were greeted by less than ideal conditions over the weekend due to the amount of rainfall leading up to the games. This was one of many challenges faced along the way but each of the athletes, although not performing to their full potential, represented themselves and the Academy extremely well, something they can all be proud of.

Christine Shin was our stand out performer finishing second in the girls gross and winning overall net for the two days. Well done Christine”.

Our male and female squads competed in a round robin competition at Wyong Hockey Complex, playing off against Northern Inland, Western Region, Illawarra, South West Sydney and Hunter Academies of Sport. The squads put in an impressive performance against tough competition. SWSAS Executive Officer and Hockey convenor Gerry Knights noted how “even and competitive” the matches were over the two days. The boys Hockey squad finished in 5th place with Tristan Potts taking away the MVP title. The girls came in 3rd place, Chantelle Smith was named MVP.

The WSAS boys Softball squad made their way to Bateau Bay Sports Complex to compete in games against Southern Metropolitan, Hunter Academy and South West Sydney Academy on day 1, to then head into finals matches on day 2. The WSAS squad came in second place to the South West Sydney Academy in a competitive game playing a full 7 innings. Squad manager Jo Beach said “The WSAS boys stood-up this weekend and showed they are a real threat this year to other Academies – a great team of athletes wanting to push the boundaries even further for success, teamwork, camaraderie and getting to the finals”.

The Academy’s Division 2 team played at the Central Coast Grammar School venue in a round robin style competition. The weekend saw them compete against 9 Academies remaining undefeated over the entire weekend. The MVP was awarded to Maddison Robertson who played exceptionally well!

Our Division 1 team competed at Niagara Park, where the competition was strong. Team Coach Helen Olivier said “The athletes enjoyed playing their counterparts” following on stating “Close contests occured against the Central Coast Academy on home territory, and Sydney Netball Academy where Netball was the winner.” The MVP title went to goal attack Matisse Letherbarrow for the second year running. Matisse displayed a consistent and high level of performance over the two days of competition.
