Athletes Shine at the ‘Your Local Club’ Academy Games

Last weekend saw over 80 athletes from the Western Sydney Academy of Sport’s netball, golf, softball and AFL girls’ squads travel to the Hunter region to compete in the 2018 ‘Your Local Club’ Academy Games.

Hosted by the Hunter Academy of Sport in the Hunter region, the Games were officially opened at a Welcoming Ceremony attended by over 1,000 athletes and family members. As has been the tradition over many years, the Academy presented strong and talented young athletes at the Games competitions.

The recently formed AFL girls team, who have only had four training sessions together to date, competed in the very first AFL girls tournament the Games have seen. The tournament acted as a talent identification weekend for the girls, and an opportunity to showcase their talent. The Western Sydney squad played five games over two days against various Regional Academies and invitational teams.

10 Western Sydney golfers competed at the Games over the weekend, with local Blacktown athlete Brielle Mapanao shining as the star performer. Brielle placed first in the girl’s division with a score of 76.

The Academy’s netballers maintained their reputation as the top Academy squad at a packed out Maitland Federation Stadium. Special mention must be given to the Division 1 squad who went through the tournament undefeated. Hills athlete Sarah Okunbor and Cumberland athlete Monalisa Soliola were named as the Academy’s most valuable players.

The Academy provided both a Boys’ and Girls’ team for competition who presented a lot of talent. Both squads had the opportunity to show their skills on the Saturday, however rain washed out the Sunday games. Overall the Academy girls finished in second place.
