Once a year, Academy athletes get the opportunity to apply for a scholarship that provides valuable financial assistance to help ease the burden associated with progression to the elite level within their sport.
Thanks to Woolworths one male and one female high achieving athlete will each receive a $5,000 cash grant. The cash grant is comprised of two components. The first is a $4,000 Sports Participation Grant to provide financial assistance to the athlete/parents in respect of ongoing participation costs. The second is a $1,000 Educational Grant which must be utilised to assist in the athletes ongoing secondary/tertiary education.
In addition to these two grants the Academy also awards a ‘Team Athlete of the Year’ award out of the Woolworths Scholarship nominees. This award grants $1,000 to the recipient, again to assist with the financial burdens of athlete progression within the elite pathway of their chosen sport.
In 2018 Lone Star athlete Ashleigh Hill won the female category of the Woolworths Scholarship award for her outstanding achievements in her sport – karate. In 2018 Ashleigh was the NSW State 59kg and NSW Opens Karate Champion. Joshua Brodie from the Academy’s Cycling squad was the other recipient of the award. Among many achievements, Joshua was named captain of the NSW Track Cycling Team at the Junior Track Championships in 2018.
The ‘Team Athlete of the Year’ grant was awarded to softball athlete Alex Gutteridge who was selected into the 2018 NSW U17 squad and Australian U17 squad.
Nominations close on Friday 30 August at close of business and winners will be announced at the 2019 Athlete Dinner & Awards Night (if you have not secured your tickets for the dinner you can do so by clicking here).
