Woolworths Scholarships Highlight Top Athletes

Once a year Academy athletes get the opportunity to apply for a scholarship that provides valuable financial assistance to help ease the burden associated with progression to the elite level within their sport. Thanks to Woolworths one male and one female high achieving athlete will each receive a $5,000 cash grant. The cash grant is comprised of two components. The first will be a $4,000 Sports Participation Grant to provide financial assistance to the athlete/parents in respect of ongoing participation costs. The second will be a $1,000 Educational Grant which must be utilised to assist in the athletes ongoing secondary/tertiary education.

In addition to these two grants the Academy also awards a ‘Team Athlete of the Year’ award out of the Woolworths Scholarship nominees. This award grants $1,000 to the recipient, again to assist with the financial burdens of athlete progression within the elite pathway of their chosen sport.

In 2016 cyclist Stephen Cuff was the two time winner of the male category after winning numerous State and National events throughout the year. In 2016 Stephen became the youngest winner of the Bathurst to Blayney 70km Short Course. This year he has gone on to gain selection into the 2017 Australian Team for the Junior Track Worlds, which will be held in August this year.

In 2017 Lone Star athlete Ashleigh Hill won the female category of the Woolworths Scholarship award for her outstanding achievements in her sport – karate. In 2017 Ashleigh was the NSW State and NSW Opens Karate Champion. Joshua Brodie from the Academy’s Cycling squad was the other recipient of the award after being named NSW Cycling of the Year in 2017 and was two-time Australian Champion.

The ‘Team Athlete of the Year’ grant was awarded to softballer Shaylan Whatman who had been selected into the State squad and had been a dedicated senior member of the squad.

Nominations close on Friday 17 August and winners will be announced at the 2018 Athlete Dinner & Awards Night (if you have not secured your tickets for the dinner you can do so by clicking here).
